The latest GA minutes contain a proposal to clean up the site beyond legal requirements while such an act would reward our abuser, the city, for abusing us. We have all the work we can possibly do in protecting ourselves, each other, and other houseless friends without wasting our time to benefit cities that don’t help us. Any cleanup we do should be aimed at recovering our belongings of value and, only if necessary (and caught), protecting our members from littering charges. We should not do anything we don’t have to do for the city because rewarding abusers will encourge them to abuse more and thus endanger ourselves and other houseless people.

Oh, and I don’t think it is legitimate to be laboring to protect our “reputation”. If people are do dumb to see that a place where we are not welcome is not our responsibility, then we don’t care what they think of us anyway. We should protect ourselves from physical littering arrests and that is all!

I respectfully disagree. It is public land; we are members of the public. Therefore it is our responsibility to keep it clean when we use it, even if we disagree with the ordinances passed by City Council. And we do need to be mindful of how the larger community perceives us; there are plenty of folks who agree with our larger goals but think fighting the local city council is a waste of time, and I think it would be unwise of us to alienate them.

There Is NO “larger level” on the only significant issue, the right to sleep. The feds or state or Wall Street don’t ban sleeping, ONLY the CITY and for profit abutters like Pack’s Tavern. Plus anyone who blames us for being evicted is too stupid to be worth attracting. It is not our job to avoid alienating the insane.
