The Occupy Caravan, en route from the West Coast to the Occupy National Gathering in Philadelphia (June 30 to July 4), is stopping in Asheville from June 23rd to 25!

Occupy Asheville will hold events on Sunday, June 24th to welcome the Caravaners and share experience, ideas & information with Occupiers from across the country. Community meals, entertainers, dialogue, speeches, presentations, and more, including a Rally and “Stories of Occupy” Playback Theatre performance. It’s free and open to all!

    Schedule of Events:

12:00*: Potluck Lunch @ Rooftop Gardens at Battery Park Apartments, 1 Battle Square
Share experiences with organizing and activism, make Occupy T-shirts, and enjoy free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Later in the afternoon, The New South Network will present War on Earth! Environmental Impact: Atomic Appalachia and the Militarized Southeast U.S.

*Please arrive at Battery Park Apartments before 12:30, as the entrance is locked.

    5:00: Rally: Pritchard Park
Music, speeches, sign-making station, 99-second Soapbox and more!

6:15: Dinner / Public Assembly: WNC Baha’i Center, 5 Ravenscroft Drive
Reports from local and national activists. “Beware of Delaware” puppet show. Free meal provided by the awesome Rosetta.

    7:30: Playback Theatre: Baha’i Center
Share your Occupy (and other) stories, & watch them reinterpreted via improv theatre!

Asheville Playback Theatre is a unique, community-oriented experience where citizen actors take personal stories from audience members and transforms them into performance pieces. From their website:

“APT’s public performances are all part of the overall theme “Building a Community of Neighbors… APT extends a special invitation to people who do not often attend live theatre, people whose history or experience in Asheville is not commonly shared, and people who are curious to meet new neighbors and reach across some of the divides that exist in our community.”

    Check them out at http://www.globalplayback.org/asheville-playback.htm

    Other Happenings:

We will meet the Caravan as it arrives sometime Saturday afternoon or early evening. Caravaners will be invited to the weekly breakfast in Pritchard Park, from 9:00-9:30 AM. Another supporter of OA has been Jubilee; we invite those interested in a non-dogmatic & fun place to celebrate the best in each of us to their 9:45 a.m. service.

    CURRENT NEEDS:

Hospitality: do you have a couch (or a floor) to offer one or more Caravaners for a night or two? How about laundry? Send a message to Meggen if you’d like to help.

Set-up Crew: Can you come early to the Baha’i Center and help set up food, etc.? Call Grace at (828) 255-3990 (home) or (828) 329-9674 (cell.)

ACTIVIST ACTORS! Come be a part of Playback Theatre! Attend a free Activist Actor training on Saturday, June 23rd, from 10:00-1:00 at Harvest House, 205 Kenilworth Road.
